The MULBERRY TREE
Out side Effie's Dreams
The tree in our front yard is a White Mulberry the full name being Morus Macrophylla.
The family name
is Moraceae and there are about 7 species native to North and South America
Africa and Asia. Here in Greece I’m not sure.
This Mulberry tree is over 1000 year old they say, makes not to many white
berries but in the back of Effie’s Dreams building not belonging to us there is
a mulberry tree but the berries are dark purple towards a black colour. Also to
the side of us there is a white mulberry tree that make's fruit late May and
early June.
Silkworms were traditionally fed on the leaves of these tree (my cousin still
makes fancy work with the silkworm shells; she breeds the silk worms, only a few
at a time). Silkworms don’t feed on the black mulberry tree leaves. (They keep
the silk warms in cardboard boxes with the leaves in them. Some times they go
out of the box. it's all fun).
It must have a historical value. Every winter my dad has to prune it right back
and by mid summer it’s fully grown again. The branches have grown up to 2.75
meters in a year. Birds every afternoon approximately come at 6:00 pm to settle
in the tree to sleep. The sound they make for half hour until they go to sleep
is fantastic. While they are asleep you can pat them and they don’t go away.
