Through the ancient period; 6th/7th Century BC, Gennadi Village was located in the PEDION municipality, which was one of the well known municipalities of Lindos (27 kl away). During the Mediaeval years, many fertile properties belonged to the landowner "Gennadians", after whom our village was named. In the year 1309, Gennadi was conquered by the Knights. This was mentioned in the documents of the Knights of Saint John, from the years 1474 and 1479. In 1854 all of the 80 houses were Greek, there was also a castle of the Knights. Gennadi was conquered by the Ottomans in 1522, and by the Italians in 1912. It was liberated on the 7th of March 1948 the Germans come for a year and then the English also for a year. Before WW2 there was approx.2000 people in Gennadi then slowly they started to emigrate to Australia, America, Germany, Italy and other places.
Today Gennadi is still unspoiled agricultural nice and quite with it's every day local life where tourist can fit in nicely and enjoy. It's location due to its ever clean and stretching seashore. There are several units offering modern day facilities, traditional taverns and restaurants. The enthusiasm and warmth of the residents covers every service need by our visitor.
Gennadi’s main road and it’s Square where everyone meets, is approximately 250 meters from the beautiful pebbled and sandy deep blue clear clean beach sea. . This beach extends down to Plimiri 15 km away. Our beach (which has won the coveted EU Blue flag award) has restaurants and a cafe, and further along a hotel with swimming pool surrounded by fields. People staying at Effie's Dreams may use the swimming pool at the hotel down by the beach for free. The main village is about a mile from the mountains and hills, which contain many monasteries from previous centuries. There are three churches in the village, one is Agia Anastasia a monastery from the 6th century where you can walk the path through the trees and see the birds, smell the herbs and fruits in season, to come up into the village through the citrus trees to the pictuesque Saint John's Theologos church (Effie’s Dreams is situated the street below it in the citrus trees next to the path). and near by is the olive press museum, pass the attractively natural spring water tap. The other is Vangelismou Theotokou a very small nice church. It's nameday is 25 of March. Then less then 2 minutes into the center off town, where all restaurants, bars, night clubs, stores (super markets, tourist clothes, shoe shop and gold/silver shop. (Minnettos mini market owned by the originals owner’s son & is kept pretty much the way it was a century ago He's 82 years old).

Please come and see the village of Gennadi. There's also a cave in this part of the area and through this cave the spring water runs. Its at Pano Vrisi, the water is drinkable. You can ask to see the photos of the cave at Effie's Dreams.
There is so much to see, taste and experience that it can’t all be covered from reading this. For e.g. the loquid (mosmila) fruit that's out in April and the mulberries that are out mid May, come and cut them from the trees behind Effie's Dreams. The olive picking season starting in November. (the oil we serve in Effie's Dreams  in the Greek salad is from the olives the family picks). Just over 600 people live here through the year. The village provides accommodation for the visitors. It's still very much a small Greek village, in its ways, but has its comforts for the visitors. I hope this information helps, as we would love to see more tour operators and guest visit this wonderfully relaxing place and get  to know us, our way of life & culture.
Gennadi has a lot of history. Old men sit in the cafes, drinking their coffee and playing cards or backgammon and telling stories about the past. One of these stories relates to the house I live in, it was my grandmother’s and had been built by her father in 1927 as part of her dowry and my father was born in it in 1937. The building was taken over by the Italians during WW2 in order to house their offices. Most houses had their own wells and ovens in their courtyard to bake bread, there are still a few ladies that bake that way. Many people in the village speak different languages
(English, Italian and German). If you would like more information please feel free to contact me (Effie).
Thank you for giving me the opportunity, to tell you about the village.

The first Saturday after the 15th off August, approximately 2kl out of the village is Saint Sava's monastery where they have a festival.
The Gas stations in South Rhodes are in Kiotari (
+302244047044), Kattavia and Apolakia (+302244061416).

WEATHER normally from the reports that they give are not accurate for the south side off the Island, its for the north side (Rhodes town). In Town it could be raining and in Gennadi it would be sun shine. The three warmest places on the island are Archangelos, Lindos and Gennadi. Gennadi has a very nice beach to go and swim to cool down or come up to Effie's Dreams cafe bar and sit under the mulberry tree, drink your beer, see and hear the natural water spring run. The water comes from the cave and it's drinkable. As the myth goes here in the village. "If you drink this water, you will come back to Gennadi again" What the say is that what ever weather you have on the 26/11 that's the weather you have on Christmas day but others say what ever it is on the 5/12.
