MONASTERIES.

SKIADI Monastery Ph:+30 2244046006
The first Friday after Easter the people of Gennadi walk through the fields early in the morning to the little monastery in Asklipio they have a picnic and then in the afternoon, they start walking back on the main road taking turns caring the icon of Skiadi back with them to Gennadi by 5 pm approximately they have it here.
The next day the people from Lachania come to take it and it just goes around the Island in that way. The festival of Skiadi is on the 7th of September in the evening and the next day it’s the church service (8th of September the birth of Virgin Mary, that is also celebrated by the Monastery of Tsampika) and the speeches and the council normally service food free to all that is there. (Skiadi is the Patron of South Rhodes).
There are books on the story of the icon and the monastery of Skiadi.
On the main road between Kattavia and Apolakia on the south of the island going to the west coast, there is concrete road and small parts of it is still gravel. You drive up and there is the monastery of Skiadi. Your soul feels at peace up there. It was founded in 1861. Previously the monastery was there in the 12th century. The icon there is the Virgin Mary which is a very old. It’s a wooden Mural with silver and glass to protect it.
SKIADI: The icon got it's name from the word SKIA which means shade cause it was found in the forest under the shade. The Scar it has on the face of Mother Mary it was caused from the Turks and she made there ships into cement, that is the 2 stone you see across in the sea that look like ships. This is the story I was told.
On the 8th of September, it’s the day that we take the 5 breads as a thank you, (long story you can ask us about it) a lot of people take there the 5 breads (Pentarti).

WEATHER normally from the reports that they give are not accurate for the south side off the Island, its for the north side (Rhodes town). In Town it could be raining and in Gennadi it would be sun shine. The three warmest on the island are Archangelos, Lindos and Gennadi. Gennadi has a very nice beach to go and swim to cool down or come up to Effie's Dreams cafe bar and sit under the mulberry tree drink your beer, see and hear the natural water spring run. The water comes from the cave and it's drinkable. As the myth goes here in the village. "If you drink this water, you will come back to Gennadi again".

OSTRICH FARM & PARK. Open from 9 am to 7:30 pm 3 Euro (Adults) 1,50 Euro (Children). There is a lot of other animals there to see. They also have a souvenir shop and snack bar. It's 1500 meters before the Butterfly valley.
